New Sports franchise in San Diego:
A sports team is coming to San Diego. It was reported in May that there will be a new soccer franchise in San Diego. The team will play in the MLS starting in 2025. More details will be released at a latter date, but we do have some updates on the team in San Diego. The team will be owned by Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour, who bought the team for 500 million dollars. Other co-owners will be the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, San Diego Padres superstar Manny Machado, Brad Termini and the Right to Dream's soccer academy Tom Vernon and Dan Dickinson.
San Diego soccer club Ceo`s thoughts:
Former president of LAFC, Tom Penn will be the team's CEO. MLS Commissioner Don Gerber had this to say about the new soccer club in San Diego: "We are thrilled to welcome San Diego to Major League Soccer as our 30th team," he continued and stated: "For many years we have believed San Diego would be a terrific MLS market due to its youthful energy, great diversity, and the fact that soccer is an essential part of everyday life for so many people. Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Tribe have an incredible vision for building a club that will inspire and unite soccer fans throughout the city and region." San Diego beat out Las Vegas for the new expansion team.
The 30th Franchise in the MLS!
The club will be the 30th team in the MLS. Since 2017, there have been 9 expansion teams joining the league with clubs such as Atlanta United, Minnesota United, LAFC, FC Cincinnati, Inter Miami, Nashville SC, Austin FC, Charlotte FC, St. Louis FC and now San Diego. The Club will begin their inaugural season in 2025
The new home of the San Diego Soccer Club:
They will play in the new Snapdragon Stadium which was built in August of 2022. The stadium fits 32,000 and the teams that currently play there are the San Diego State football team, Major League Rugby's San Diego Legion and the National Women's Soccer League team the San Diego Wave. Snapdragon Stadium hosted a men's national team exhibition between Mexico and Cameroon back on June 10 and a Gold Cup semifinal last week which was July 12. On July 25, Manchester United will face Wrexham A.F.C which is owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in a friendlies match. This time will likely be the final expansion team in a while for the MLS as they currently have no plans to put a new team in the League. If there is however, a new team, it will likely either be in Las Vegas or Sacramento.
Closing
The MLS has tried to get a new franchise for years now. With San Diego getting the 30th franchise in the MLS, they will now join other soccer franchises in California such as LA Galaxy, the current champions LA FC and the San Jose Earthquakes. They are expected to begin playing in 2025 and will be the second professional sports team in the city of San Diego. Their mascot, colors and logo will be named at a later date. A permanent name, along with colors and a logo, are expected to be unveiled later in either late of 2023 or early 2024.
