Houston Names Tulane`s Willie Fritz As Their New Head Coach After Dismissing Dana Holgorsen

In a move that would have been shocking just two years ago, the University of Houston has announced the hiring of Tulane's Willie Fritz, as the successor to Dana Holgorsen. The decision comes on the heels of a disappointing 4-8 season in the Big 12. Houston wanted to hire a new leader capable of steering the team back to success.


Willie Fritz has coaching experience and a track record of success to the Cougars. Fritz served as the head coach at Tulane for seven seasons. He built a reputation for turning programs around and instilling a winning culture. His coaching philosophy prioritizes discipline, player development, and strategic play calling.


Fritz's successful tenure at Tulane included notable achievements such as AAC title in 2022 and a Cotton bowl victory over USC. His ability to maximize the potential of his players and adapt to different conferences makes him an appealing choice for a Houston program seeking a fresh start.

He also has a a lot experience coaching in Texas as he also coached at Sam Houston State in two different stints, Blinn College and Tulane. Fritz has a head coaching record of 208-116 and has been coaching college football since 1982. His first stop was at his alma matter Pittsburgh State. He then was at a plethora of different stops and they included Sam Houston State as a graduate assistant. Fritz then had stops at Willis high school in Texas, Cofeyville as DC, returned back to Sam Houston State as a DB and Special teams coach. After his second stint at Sam Houston State, Fritz then went to Blinn College when he won two junior college championships. In 1997 he went to Central Missouri and was there until 2009. After his time at Central Missouri he went to Georgia Southern and then was at Tulan from 2016 until 2023. His last game as coach, they fell in the AAC Championship game to SMU.
