After 14 seasons in the NBA, Gordon Hayward is calling it a career! Hayward announced his retirement on social media. Hayward played with four teams in his career and made the All-Star game in 2017. He played with the Jazz, Celtics, Hornets and Thunder. In his career, the Butler product averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and shot 45.5% from the field. The 34 year old was drafted by the Jazz in 2010 after a stellar collegiate career at Buttler. Hayward led the Bulldogs to the championship game and almost beat Duke as he almost made a half-court shot at the buzzer. During his All-Star season, Hayward averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1 steal per game and shot 47% percent from the field. In 2017, Hayward signed with Boston. He was expected to get even better with the Celtics, but suffered a fractured tibia and dislocated his ankle. He never quite returned to form as the injury cost him the entire season. In 2020, he signed with the Hornets on a 4 year $120 million dollar deal. He played with Charlotte for three and half seasons before being traded to the OKC. The Thunder acquired Hayward to help them in their playoff push. The Thunder clinched the top seed, but fell to the Mavs in the second round. Despite acquiring him for the postseason, Hayward failed to get any minutes in the playoffs. Hayward thanked the fans and everyone that helped him during his career.
Early Career and Rise to Stardom
Gordon Hayward's basketball journey began at Butler University, where he quickly made a name for himself as a standout player. Leading the Butler Bulldogs to the NCAA championship game in 2010, Hayward's clutch performances and all-around game caught the attention of NBA scouts. He declared for the NBA Draft and was selected 9th overall by the Utah Jazz in the 2010 NBA Draft.
Utah Jazz: Establishing Himself as an NBA Star
Hayward spent his first seven seasons with the Jazz, gradually developing into one of the league's most reliable forwards. His ability to score, rebound, and facilitate made him a key player for the Jazz. In the 2016-2017 season, Hayward earned his first and only All-Star selection, averaging 21.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. His stellar performance led the Jazz to the playoffs, solidifying his status as a solid NBA player.
Boston Celtics: Overcoming Adversity
In 2017, Hayward signed a lucrative four-year contract with the Celtics, teaming up with Kyrie Irving in hopes of bringing another championship to the storied franchise. However, tragedy struck in the very first game of the 2017/2018 season when Hayward suffered a horrific ankle injury just minutes into the game. The injury sidelined him for the entire season, and his road to recovery was long and arduous.
Despite the setback, Hayward showed remarkable determination and resilience. He returned to the court in the 2018-2019 season, and although it took time to regain his pre-injury form, he gradually became a vital contributor for the Celtics. His leadership and veteran presence were invaluable to a very young Boston team.
