Duke Welcomes Manny Diaz as New Head Coach



In a significant development for Duke football, Manny Diaz has been named the new head coach, succeeding Mike Elko, who departed to take the head coaching position at Texas A&M. Diaz, previously the defensive coordinator at Penn State, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. As the Blue Devils look to make strides, all eyes will be on Diaz to lead the team to new heights.


Manny Diaz, a seasoned coach with a reputation for defensive prowess, has earned respect in the college football community for his strategic acumen and player development skills. Before his stint at Penn State, Diaz served as the head coach at the University of Miami. He was fired towards the end of the 2021 season ended when the University was looking to hire then Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal.

Manny Diaz's impact on Penn State's defense during the regular season was nothing short of remarkable. Under his guidance, the Nittany Lions boasted one of the top-ranked defense in the country, holding opponents to an average of just 223.3 yards per game. Notably, his defensive strategy was a key factor in Penn State finishing third in scoring defense, allowing a mere 11.4 points on average. The Nittany Lions' defensive prowess played a crucial role in their impressive regular-season performance, with only two defeats against formidable Big Ten opponents such as Ohio State and Michigan. Diaz's defensive unit, building on its No. 16 ranking in total defense during last season which capped off the year with a triumphant Rose Bowl victory against Utah, showcasing his ability to consistently elevate and refine defensive excellence.


Diaz inherits a Duke program that has shown promise the last two years. Duke went 9-4 in 2022 and started the season 5-1 before injuries started to affect the season. He will now be tasked with continuing what Elko started the last two seasons. The Blue Devils did lose a lot of players during the offseason through the transfer portal and Diaz will need to recoupe those losses by recruting well. He will also need to get some players from the transfer portal as well.

Duke's coaching change comes on the heels of the departure of Mike Elko, who accepted the head coaching position at Texas A&M.
